Having lived there briefly god knows what the airburst at Machynelleth is for; a sentiment echoed by DC himself, I think. Unless, maybe, oh god, the Buckingham Palace tube tunnels terminus is there!!!1!! zomg. I heard Stephen Fry say on QI a while back that there was an old joke going around about Cardiff and the bomb... "...a nuclear attack on Cardiff yesterday caused £7.50 worth of damage..."

The problem faced with guessing what occurred in the 1980's is that very little information on thinking on this era is publicly available and this is
unlikely to change in the near future. You'll find the CO get very twitchy when people start talking to them on this subject in FOI requests and its
unlikely that you'll see anything meaningful released soon.
Corsham was a great idea in the 50's, right after Strath when the plan was to sit tight, hope that the Soviets hadn't got enough devices to do too much damage and then pop up 3 months later and start all over again. Go into the 60's and everything changes in peoples thinking - the official documents are full of maudlin humour. As for Easingwold - what a place - I went there for a course in January and didn't get a chance to see "doom city" which is (or was) full of domestic nuclear shelters!

Dinorwic doesn't seem to be affected, how long could that continue to produce emergency power given that once the lake is empty, its unlikely to be filled
but the actual power demands from the 6 turbines following an attack are likely to be massively reduced - or at least power what else in in that mountain - all
that excavation, plenty of opportunity for other things...
Come to think of it, Transfynydd doesn't seem to be affected either and possibly Wylfa.

Is that by an author something Crane? No I don't have that just yet, but I've seen it cited around and about. Magnus Clarke. I haven't had a chance to read it yet, but it looks interesting. Because not letting a single journo/academic know all the military airfields in the UK is going to make a gargantuan difference when the balloon goes up. Yes, because it's not as if the Soviets don't already know where they all are, or they can be worked out from open sources.

Fascenating.
Of course the UK has extensive mines one might consider, perhaps the majority are of not much use but nevertheless......Some of them are very deep and some extend quite way out to sea under the seabed. |

"SIGINT enclaves" and you can 'spot them' all over the country apparently?

AFAIK Torness had not been built when that map was produced, which explain why other plants are not included. The reason given in the book is that an attack on nuclear power stations releases more fallout and radiation. Some of the site is pretty good, a lot of it is simply childish waffle and supposition. A bit like 'Beneath City Streets' then? |

I have always thought that the idea of attacking nuclear power stations is quite telling on a aggressors motivation; especially if you are hitting them with a groundburst. There can be no claim of attacking purely millitary targets or attempting to limit casualties if your striking reactors. It seems to me that an attack thus has no other reason than to kill as many people as possible through fall out and the longer life of the reactor isotopes. If you are attacking a nation en masse with nuc. weapons does it seriously make a difference if you leave a nuc. station untouched. The thing can produce as much juice as it wants; if the national grid isn't working then it doesn't matter: and if you attack 'properly' then the grid is not going to work for a long time either. I am intrigued by the mention of the possible formulation: proposed in part by RS Mac., and rejected by both sides, of nuclear war 'Marquess of Queensbury' rules: signing off directly attacking citeh's as well as reactors. I suppose its too worrying: there is no guarantee that the other side will stick to the rules and not attack your cities; but in a bipolar world, I reckong that maybe reactors should be declared off limits. A bit like 'Beneath City Streets' then?
